Frequently asked questions

Do I need to report payments to subcontractors?+

If construction is your business's main activity, you generally must file a T5018 information return (Statement of Contract Payments) reporting what you paid subcontractors for construction services. It is due six months after the end of the reporting period. We prepare and file T5018 returns for our contractor clients.

Can I deduct my truck and equipment?+

Equipment and vehicles used in your business are generally deducted over several years through capital cost allowance (CCA), at rates the CRA sets for each class of asset. If you also use a vehicle personally, the amount you can claim is reduced.

What is job costing?+

Job costing tracks revenue and costs, such as labour, materials and subcontractors, by job. It shows which jobs are profitable and helps you price future work.

Do I need to charge HST?+

You generally must register for HST once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. In Ontario, HST is 13%.

Which plan is right for my business?+

It depends on your volume of transactions and whether you have employees. Payroll is included in the Core and Pro plans. We can recommend a plan on a free 30-minute discovery call.
